Tscherning has always been green - even when thinking about the environment was a hippie-like ideology that no one took seriously. Georg Tscherning, our founder, designed our logo with the green fir trees as his signature, even before he even dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur.
Today, the reality is different, and no respected company can deny their responsibility towards our climate and environment. And for Tscherning, the environmental area is part of our core business.
At Tscherning – Denmark's Green Contractor, we constantly work with the development of sustainable behavior and circular economy as a business area. And we have a head start, because the green idea was actually an important benchmark for us, even 'before it was cool'.
Today we are proud of our many years of work with the systematic collection of the company's CO2 data. In the EU, we are on the threshold of a statutory registration, and Tscherning is so good that our data can be transferred to any of the standards that are in play.
Of course, recording CO2 in itself does not help the climate, but in order for us both as an industry and society to identify areas where CO2 emissions must be reduced, it is necessary to record emissions systematically and uniformly.
That is why we also offer our customers to make CO2 accounts for our part of the work on a given project, and we are always open to collaborations on climate improvement and reduction of CO2 with other players in the construction industry.
Environmental remediation and demolition make up approximately half of Tscherning's business, and demolition involves handling large quantities of materials, some of which are usable for recycling. When we recycle materials, we achieve two major gains. In part, the CO2 used to produce a material is not wasted. And partly we save CO2 by reducing the amount of materials that have to be manufactured anew.
In Tscherning, we work actively to set aside materials from our projects for reuse, up-cycling and recycling.
Tscherning has initiated a process where the company's fleet of cars and machines will be continuously replaced with electric alternatives.
In the past year alone, we have replaced, among other things, 4 electric cars, 8 mini dumpers, 4 loaders, 2 excavators, 2 dumpers, 4 plate vibrators and various hand machines.
The electricity at our largest locations is converted to CO2-neutral wind energy from Ørsted, and we continuously seek to participate in projects where trees and shrubs are planted to counteract the CO2 emissions that our production causes. Among other things, we have planted an area of 2000 m2 around our warehouse, which corresponds to a CO2e of 47,400 kg. CO2e.
The area is today "inhabited" by a flock of active honey bees from our hives.
A good and safe working environment is the alpha and omega for the well-being of our employees, which is why we naturally do everything we can to ensure this. First of all, Tscherning always complies with the standard ISO 45001 (formerly OHAS 18001) and executive orders 87 and 923. This ensures that the tasks are carried out under proper working conditions, which benefit the employees and prevent work injuries and subsequent delays.
We continuously work to improve the conditions on our sites through an active effort from our KMA department (Quality, Environment and Working Environment), which conducts ongoing supervision, guidance and advice on safety regulations. In recent years, this has resulted in a significant increase in the number of "Green Smileys" from the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority when they have routinely carried out random checks of our places.
At Tscherning, we believe that all people should have the opportunity to show what they can do. That's why we want to take the chance to give people this opportunity. We hire on the basis of qualifications and willingness to work - not on the basis of people's past.
If people want to try their hand at the job as a demolition driver, we are happy to take them on an internship.
We have previously had interns from both DTU and KEA, where we have also participated in presentations, fairs and career events on the courses.
We live off of skilled employees. And we would like to help ensure that both we and the rest of the construction industry also have the opportunity to hire qualified labor in the future.
A good working environment and community creates well-being and happy employees.
That is why we at Tscherning have a policy that the workplace should, as far as possible, also be a social community. We appreciate employee activities, encourage social events and support initiatives for these.
Among other things, we have purchased a number of mountain bikes for free use by the company's employees and encourage "walk & talk" meetings and gatherings. We regularly organize company outings, evening events and have an active staff association.
We have a strong focus on sustainable purchases, and we serve a daily organic lunch at our head office. Our goal is to create a safe, fun and comfortable workplace that our employees can go home happy and proud of.
We actively seek opportunities to find female candidates in job advertisements, just as we continuously include equality in our considerations regarding internal promotions among our employees. At management level, Tscherning today has 30% women.
In the manufacturing sector, it is unfortunately difficult to have an equal distribution between the sexes, as the proportion of female candidates and respondents to job advertisements is close to non-existent.
If the gender distribution in the construction industry is to change, it requires a cultural change over many years. Tscherning actively contributes to this by continuously trying to influence the working climate, working methods and tone of voice in both production and management.

Tscherning is developing positively, not least because we work purposefully to integrate the ten principles of the UN Global Compact into our strategy, culture and daily operations of our company.
Our social responsibility and green profile must both be our trademark and the basis for a sustainable grocery store in Tscherning. In the coming years, we will therefore prioritize the areas of effort that contribute to us continuing to maintain our goal of delivering the industry's best quality and ensuring the best working environment conditions and minimum environmental impact.
Tscherning works actively with the UN's Global Goals. Based on our company profile and the industry we are part of, we have chosen to have a special focus on world goals no. 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13.
