A new giant has moved into a forest near Hedehusene. The troll “Georg and the Bird,” created by world-renowned upcycling artist Thomas Dambo, was officially unveiled on Sunday, May 17—built from reclaimed wood from Tscherning’s own projects.

But the troll is more than just a work of art in nature. It is also a symbol of how the green transition and social responsibility can go hand in hand.

From demolition to new life

At Tscherning , we Tscherning every day with transformation—both of materials and buildings. With “Georg and the Bird,” surplus wood from demolition projects has been transformed into a new gathering place in nature, where children and adults can explore and let their imaginations run wild.

The troll is built on screw foundations provided by Fremtidens Fundament, a company in Tscherning , and also holds a special piece of Tscherning’s history: a cast-iron bird created by Georg Tscherning, the company’s founder.

“At Tscherning , our mission Tscherning to think more circularly—to reuse more and throw away less. Even though a large part of our business involves demolition, we want to help give materials a new lease on life and ensure that we take good care of both the environment and nature,” says CEO Søren Tscherning.

A project built by people

The project also took on a very special human dimension. In collaboration with the Municipality of Høje-Taastrup, five Ukrainian refugees joined the construction project, working side by side with Thomas Dambo’s team and Tscherning’s employees.

It quickly became clear that the partnership involved much more than just practical assistance.

“We needed extra hands to help bring the troll Georg to life. That’s why we reached out to the Høje-Taastrup municipality, which, like us, saw the potential, and it made perfect sense to get help from our Ukrainian friends, who were truly skilled with their hands—which is why three of them have since been hired on a permanent basis,” says Søren Tscherning.

For Tscherning , the project Tscherning a concrete example of how companies can contribute to both environmental and social sustainability through action.

A new place to gather

Mayor Michael Ziegler attended the opening ceremony and highlighted the importance of the collaboration and the new tourist attraction in the municipality.

“It’s wonderful to see a local business like Tscherning the lead and create a gathering place that combines art, play, sustainability, and social responsibility. Thomas Dambo’s trolls are known around the world for getting people out into nature, and the fact that we now have ‘Georg and the Bird’ here in Hedehusene—created in collaboration with new residents in our municipality—is a huge win for everyone,” says Michael Ziegler.

“Georg and the Bird” is part of Thomas Dambo’s international troll universe, which every year inspires thousands of people around the world to explore nature. Now, Hedehusene has gained yet another magical landmark—built from recycled materials, skilled craftsmanship, and new communities.
